The recent happenings in the Israel-Palestine conflict have confirmed that the first casualty in war is truth.
The Israel-Palestine conflict has been on for decades.
And if you are trying to understand the origin of the whole conflict, this thread is for you.
What’s going on between Palestine and Israel is simply a battle for land and territories. That's pretty much the summary.
But if you are interested in the details, your reading has just begun.
Not to worry, I sprinkled this piece with enough humor and metaphor to keep you to the end.
So let's proceed. 👊
HISTORY AND THE HOLY BOOKS
If you are familiar with the history books and the holy writings, you would’ve read about Egypt, Israel, Jews, and so on.
Abraham’s birthplace is the Middle East (Israel and Palestine are in the Middle East).
As much as some people try to link what is happening today to ancient religious history, historians believe this is the wrong way to look at it.
And quite frankly, how do you link a war happening in 2023 to the story of King David which happened over 3,000 years ago?
And before you pick a side based on religion, know this - Not all Israelis are Christians and not all Palestinians are Muslims!!
THE ORIGINAL ORIGIN
The current dispute can safely be traced to the 1900s. In the 1900s, the piece of land where modern-day Israel and Palestine sit was part of a region called the Ottoman Empire. An empire that was later dismantled after WW I.
If you didn’t skip your geography and history classes, this map shouldn’t give you PTSD
ZIONISM, MODERN ISRAEL, AND PALESTINE
The 20th century was easily the century of Independence. Many nations were formed in this period and Israel and Palestine “did not carry last.”
In the 1900s, the Palestinians started to develop a sense of nationality distinct from the Arabs.
Israel also had their own wheelbarrow or “omolanke” if you will. They were also pushing for their own country. The Israelis called this move Zionism.
There you have it - Two groups of people fighting for their sovereignty.
But there was a huge problem. These groups of people were clustered on the same piece of land.
As a result, there was bitter and violent conflict between these groups.
THE SHARING THAT NEVER HAPPENED
When the Ottowan Empire fell after WW I, the British Empire was there to "administer" the affairs of the fallen Ottowan Empire.
In 1947, the UN planned to officially split the land between Israel and Palestine.
Trust me, if you have ever tried to share a plate of food with your siblings, you will know that such sharing exercises rarely end well.
Anyways, the plan to solve the problem by sharing the lands only made things worse.
A look at the map tells you why it didn't work:
VALAR KOMBATIS - ALL MEN MUST FIGHT
In 1948, the UN announced this land-sharing exercise and all hell broke loose.
The Arab regions considered the sharing unfair and a war broke out. It was all shades of violence and “katakata” between Israel and some Arab nations.
A lot of go-low lows happened in the battleground but Israel eventually bugged their opponents.
Israel didn't only win the war, they also took control of 33% more land than the proposed sharing exercise would have given them. The Israelis moved in and settled in these lands.
In 1967, the famous 6-day war happened between Israel and some Arab countries. Israel won and took control of more land.
Since then, up till 2023, the Palestinians have had different battles with Israel.
They claim that Israel is sitting on their land. This hatred has been passed down from one generation to another. Down to what we have today.
2023 - DEM NEVER SEE ME COMING
The 2023 saga began at 06:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 7 2023 when Hamas launched a triple-threat attack on Israel.
International media describe Hamas as a Palestinian Islamist militant group. You can call them the resistance.
On Saturday morning, Hamas launched surprise attacks on Israel via land, water, and air. If they added fire, the world would have mistaken it for an avatar attack.
Hamas said the attack was a payback for Israel's crimes.
Israel’s military immediately responded with the operation “Swords of Iron.”
Israel attacked Palestine in return.
Right now, the media reports that over 600 lives have been lost it’s not even up to 3 days yet.
INTERNATIONAL COMMENTARY
As much as this Israeli-Palestinian conflict is old, international communities seem to be blaming Palestine’s Hamas for this particular attack.
Because it's giving trouble sleep, yanga go wake am.
The US has declared that it stands with Israel.
International communities are openly and secretly taking sides already
And it’s too early to conclude how this will end.
As to what I think about this matter. It’s really complicated and I have learned that it is fine not to have immediate public opinions on certain matters.
What do you think will happen?
This conflict is about a century old - Will these groups ever reach a compromise?
Are we looking at another war?
I guess only time can answer these questions accurately. . . If you found this helpful, please reward me with a retweet and a follow.
